Sua Sponte. Fenn's motto, which translates to "it's in your hands", is something that will stick with me for the rest of my life. The saying states what it means to be a studious, resourceful, diligent student, while it also explains the basis of a courageous, helpful, caring person. Fenn's values are something to be remembered. Sua Sponte is something that means a lot to me, and it will influence me throughout my high school years.
One of my earliest Sua Sponte moments was the sixth grade explorer project. I had never been assigned a project so intimidating. A nine page journal from the perspective of a famous explorer had me shaking. At first, I was completely stressed about the process, but over time, I grew more comfortable. The fact that the project was "in my hands" helped me along. I felt like I could be independent, creative, and thoughtful enough to make this project enjoyable. In the end, the explorer project was one of my best experiences of all my time at Fenn, and it is a memory I will always remember.
Another Sua Sponte moment was the ninth grade China paper. Again, this was a daunting project. The largest paper that I had ever written was four pages, but this was meant to be at least eight pages in length. I had known for the whole year that we would need to write this paper, but I didn't let it bother me. When the time came to write it, I decided to work bit by bit. I began taking notes, and when I had enough for half a page, I would write that small amount, then return to taking notes. This process was fairly slow, and somewhat inefficient, but it took much of the stress off of the project. Being able to write my own way, I felt a sense of freedom. This freedom was granted for most of the spring term of my ninth grade experience, and I loved it. I was able to do classwork, while at the same time, enjoy myself and have be trusted enough to have freedom. This is another one of my favorite things about Fenn.
While there have been other moments in my time at Fenn that reflect upon Sua Sponte, I think that it would be accurate to say that Sua Sponte affects my whole way of living. Sua Sponte has helped me develop from a middle school boy into a diligent high schooler. I believe that just these two words have affected my way of working, living, and learning.
